New cervical cancer declaration prompts more urgent action

oxford_declaration_small.jpgEvery 2 minutes a woman somewhere in the world dies of cervical cancer. 80 of the next 100 of those women will be African.

This startling statistic and many more like it has prompted a call for more urgent action to be taken by key stakeholders, including the UICC, in the fight against cervical cancer.

14th World Conference on Tobacco or Health - Declaration

14wctoh_small.jpgUICC delegates and representatives played an active role in the recent success of the 14th World Conference on Tobacco or Health, which took place between the 8th and the 12th of March 2009.

Leading scientists, doctors and politicians in addition to numerous representatives from institutions throughout the world came together in Mumbai, India, to discuss the different aspects of tobacco control and formulate a new declaration.

supporting improved cervical cancer prevention worldwide

dossier_1_small.jpg The UICC is calling for comprehensive and locally appropriate programmes including improved screening and treatment, vaccination and public and professional education. Members, colleagues and influential partners have been asked to send UICC letters in support of improved cervical cancer prevention worldwide, especially in the developing world which suffers the highest incidence and mortality. These letters have been shared with PATH and the Cervical Cancer Action coalition (CCA) to add weight to evidence of support in developing countries.
